Project Description
Savio Solar Power Solutions P1 – Māʻili is the first large-scale solar project on the island of Oahu designed for long-term community ownership. The project was designed with the input of community members, and will provide locally-owned green power for thousands of residents.
Savio Solar facilitates local ownership of the projects through the condominium ownership structure. The idea was conceived of by Peter Savio, an affordable condominium housing developer who has developed thousands of housing units in Hawaiʻi built and sold to local families. Savio observed that renters, condo-owners and low-income families were not able to access the financial savings from rooftop solar that high-income single-family homeowners have access to. He realized that inequity could be solved by building a large-scale solar farm and distributing the ownership of the farm by selling partial ownership of the facility, called “condominium units.” This method would provide true equity ownership in solar to households who previously couldn’t access rooftop solar and offer each individual owner the economies of scale of a larger project.
Savio Solar has brought together a competent team of solar professionals, and a community-driven process, to bring this project to life.
